Summary

The boys of Huaxia dream of pairing up with girls to pilot Chrysalises, giant transforming robots that can battle the mecha aliens that lurk beyond the Great Wall。 It doesn't matter that the girls often die from the mental strain。

When 18-year-old Zetian offers herself up as a concubine-pilot, it's to assassinate the ace male pilot responsible for her sister's death。 But she gets her vengeance in a way nobody expected—she kills him through the psychic link between pilots and emerges from the cockpit unscathed。 She is labeled an Iron Widow, a much-feared and much-silenced kind of female pilot who can sacrifice boys to power up Chrysalises instead。

To tame her unnerving yet invaluable mental strength, she is paired up with Li Shimin, the strongest and most controversial male pilot in Huaxia。 But now that Zetian has had a taste of power, she will not cower so easily。 She will miss no opportunity to leverage their combined might and infamy to survive attempt after attempt on her life, until she can figure out exactly why the pilot system works in its misogynist way—and stop more girls from being sacrificed。

I sat with this book for far longer than I normally do before writing a review。 My feelings around it were so complex that I almost didn't want to give it a star rating because I think it's important to break down the multiple factors that went into my experience with Xiran Jay Zhao's debut novel Iron Widow。 Conceptually, this book has absolutely everything I could ask for - a unique blend of historical and science-fiction, a badass heroine looking to smash the patriarchy, and much needed repres I sat with this book for far longer than I normally do before writing a review。 My feelings around it were so complex that I almost didn't want to give it a star rating because I think it's important to break down the multiple factors that went into my experience with Xiran Jay Zhao's debut novel Iron Widow。 Conceptually, this book has absolutely everything I could ask for - a unique blend of historical and science-fiction, a badass heroine looking to smash the patriarchy, and much needed representation in YA fiction (a polyamorous relationship instead of the tired love triangle??? Sign me up!)。 Sadly, while there were some parts of this book that I did enjoy, the execution felt devastatingly lacking。Let's start with the good because I do want to give credit where credit is due。 This book felt refreshingly unique and the premise is too tantalizing to ignore。 Zhao clearly has an incredible imagination which becomes more apparent with their world-building and development throughout the novel。 It is also very fast-paced - it only takes a few pages before readers are thrown into the action - and these action/fight scenes are some of the best in the book - making this a very quick read。 Finally, there are critical themes that permeate throughout, and powerful ways in which they are explored。 Zetian is the raging feminist we all want, and she is so much more compelling because of everything she has endured。 From feeling discarded by her family due to her gender to being reliant on a cane due to the brutal practice of feet-binding, she packs so much power as a main character。 The disability representation was one of my favorite parts of the book as it had the level of depth that I wish the rest of this novel achieved as well。Alright, now time for some brutal honesty。 The writing in this book is juvenile at best。 It took me a while to identify what felt off and ultimately I think it was childish and trying too hard。 Lines that were meant to be funny felt flat and cringe-worthy, descriptions were superficial, characters were hardly explored beyond their one or two key personality traits that then seemed to remain unchanged。 If they did experience any growth, it was rapid and unexplored, which left me unattached and uncaring for the most part。 Then we have the polyamorous trio - something I was so absurdly excited for but was left completely disappointed。 There was absolutely no chemistry between any of them and we hardly saw any of the relationships develop in a convincing way。 If anything, I felt most drawn to the MM relationship but since this book is written through Zetian's POV, we get limited insight into their journey, and instead get hit in the face with a seemingly sudden attraction between the two。 It all just felt very black and white in a book that begged for nuance。 I'm so sad to be writing this because this was a book I really wanted to love。I would still recommend this book because ultimately, my review is just my opinion, and Iron Widow still feels revolutionary in its genre。 It's worth a try。 I will also be picking up the second book because the ending was pretty incredible and I think Zhao has a lot of room for improvement - this is their first novel and they clearly have good ideas, so I am hopeful for the sequel。 。。。more

Wild and Crazy RideOh buddy, this novel did not let me go once I started and I find myself eager for a second reading。 The main character is relatable in how she has both good and bad traits and I admired her pure spite when the whole system was trying to hold her down。 The ending does leave a few questions, but that doesn't ruin the experience of the book as a whole。 Wild and Crazy RideOh buddy, this novel did not let me go once I started and I find myself eager for a second reading。 The main character is relatable in how she has both good and bad traits and I admired her pure spite when the whole system was trying to hold her down。 The ending does leave a few questions, but that doesn't ruin the experience of the book as a whole。 。。。more

Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao is a mixing and mashing of cultural influences from different periods of Chinese history and the author’s love of the mecha genre。 Many of the players throughout Chinese history and Chinese literature are found within the book。 From the master strategist, Zhuge Liang, to the delightful Monkey King, Sun Wukong(only as a reference), to our main character and narrator, Wu Zetian, the one and only Empress of China。Wu Zetian is a fascinating person in China’s history, and Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao is a mixing and mashing of cultural influences from different periods of Chinese history and the author’s love of the mecha genre。 Many of the players throughout Chinese history and Chinese literature are found within the book。 From the master strategist, Zhuge Liang, to the delightful Monkey King, Sun Wukong(only as a reference), to our main character and narrator, Wu Zetian, the one and only Empress of China。Wu Zetian is a fascinating person in China’s history, and her re-imagining by the author breathes great life into the former empress。 The author does an excellent job of bringing this historic character to a futuristic setting where men and women are paired to fight inside a mecha, called a chrysalis。 They take on many forms, from the Monkey King, the Nine-Tailed Fox, the Yellow Dragon, or the Vermilion Bird, pictured on the cover of the novel。In this retelling of Wu Zetian’s life, she starts off as a frontier girl that is friends with a young man named Yizhi, one of fourteen sons of one of the most powerful, wealthiest men in Chang’an, the capital of Huaxia。 Though Yizhi loves her, she must turn him down for her own desires。 She vows to take revenge on the young, popular pilot of the Nine-Tailed Fox, Yang Guang。 This celebrity sacrificed his partner for her qi to fight the Hunduns。 This is a feature of the design of the chrysalis。 Unfortunately for Yang Guang, this woman he used was the older sister of Wu Zetian。Wu Zetian enrolls to fight and quickly gets her revenge on Yang Guang, entering his mind realm and easily overpowering his qi with her own。 After that, a whole new host of problems enters her world。 She’s paired on with the Iron Demon, Li Shimin, pilot of the Vermilion Bird, and the most powerful male pilot in Huaxia。 The strategists Sima Yi and Zhuge Liang hope to make their Iron Widow disappear as she’s caused a massive stir after killing Yang Guang with everyone talking about her on social media。Through her own cunning and wit, she’s able to maneuver through all the barriers put before her, but they just keep coming。 As she breaks through more barriers with her partner Li Shimin, and later Yizhi, she finds just how sick and twisted her society really is。 The patriarchal society she occupies has thoroughly entrenched itself in every facet of life, filling everyone, particularly girls, with lies to believe, propagated by the media and military。 As she faces each new challenge, she slowly unravels and dismantles these lies until she has the power to effect revolutionary change。There’s always a new problem for Wu Zetian, even in the calmer moments she has to deal with emotional turmoil。 Each chapter leaves you wondering where the story will go next, what will happen to the characters, and what is to be done。 Xiran Jay Zhao has blended all of these different ideas together to create an excellent book that only they could write。 Highly recommended! 。。。more

Zetian, Yizhi, and Shimin。 Zetian's rage and unwavering determination to question the status quo。 Yizhi's devotion and willingness to do whatever it takes to ensure Zetian and Shimin stay safe。 Shimin's honorable heart and desire to right the wrongs of his past。 - I loved the relationships- I loved the balance that the three of them brought to each other。 "The triangle is the strongest shape。"I truly enjoyed this book!! The only thing that really stopped me from giving it a full 5 stars was the chaotic pacing of the story (at times)。 There were many times it felt so inconsistent- moments that would be really fleshed out and well developed only to then jump immediately into major moments with no real mention of how they got to that point。 But I。 Cannot。 Wait。 For the continuation of this story。 The ending left me breathless- I need to know what happens next! 。。。more

It’s a lot different from what I’ve been reading this year – which has mostly been high fantasy with a bit of dabbling in contemporary romances。 I cannot tell you the last time I read a sci-fi or dystopian book。This book captured me months ago from the beautiful cover and the description, not to mention the mix of The handmaiden’s Tale and Pacific Rim, but there was an underlying tone of The Hunger Games in certain areas that I haven’t enjoyed in a very long time。 There’s no part of the book that I can directly pinpoint that makes it so spectacular, no part that I can explain when I decided that I loved this book so much that I couldn’t and didn’t want to put it down。 This book covers so much that I don’t understand – or didn’t before reading this book。 Our main character Zetian is so vengeful, so upset at the anti-female system that is in place, the anti-female system that killed her sister and so many other innocent women before them。 She spends the whole book standing in the way of her vengeance。 She slaps every man (metaphorically) when they challenge her just because of her gender, just because that she is the weaker sex。The romance in Iron Widow is subtle, and so gentle but so harsh at the same time。 The scars of three different kinds of past, bringing three different people together into a triangular partnership that all together makes them so much stronger。There’s so much I want to say about Iron Widow, but I feel I would put spoilers in every other word if I were – this is a book that needs to be read, there’s no real verdict you can gain from reading a review that could truly make you understand how good this book is – how many emotions you will feel while reading it。Especially the ending – I had the briefest moment of “oh what if” closer to the beginning as a joke, but the fact that it happened, that it happened like that, there I have no real words that can tell you to read this absolutely unhinged novel。I can’t wait for it to be released, for other people to read it, so I have a collection of people that I can unhinge my jaw and scream with。 。。。more

This was without a doubt my most anticipated book of the Fall and it did not disappoint。IRON WIDOW is essentially what happens when you cross Azula from Avatar: The Last Airbender with Rin from the Poppy War, sprinkle in the alien-mechas from Neon-Genesis Evangelion, season with the elemental nature system from Naruto, and add in spiritual pressure and power levels from Bleach and Dragon Ball respectively。 And while that may seem like a mismatch of genres and anime, let me tell you, it works phe This was without a doubt my most anticipated book of the Fall and it did not disappoint。IRON WIDOW is essentially what happens when you cross Azula from Avatar: The Last Airbender with Rin from the Poppy War, sprinkle in the alien-mechas from Neon-Genesis Evangelion, season with the elemental nature system from Naruto, and add in spiritual pressure and power levels from Bleach and Dragon Ball respectively。 And while that may seem like a mismatch of genres and anime, let me tell you, it works phenomenally。This book was so fun to read, I read it in 48 hours。 I could not put it down。 For a book about a murderous woman pissed at everyone and everything (and, yes, she has good reasons for all of this), it deals with themes of misogyny very well。 The book is also surprisingly pro-LGBTQ, featuring a non-binary protagonist and a very well-written polyamorous couple。 Finally, a love triangle that cuts out all the angst and just gives us all of them together。 I loved every second of it。My complaints—and the reason this book is 4 stars instead of 5—boil down to two things。 First, the preoccupation with power levels was obnoxious。 I didn't need to be reminded about how high someone's spirit pressure was every other page。 The measurements work a lot like Scouters in DBZ, so you have quite the dick measuring contest between characters to see whose power level is higher。 At times, it feels like a lazy narrative device。 Rather than showing us how powerful the character is, Xiran Jay Zhao relies on numbers to just tell us her protagonist is the baddest of them all。The other thing boils down to the class system。 Pilots (and mechas) can be Emperor, Duke, and Princess-class, among others。 But how those rankings stack up next to one another, and how one becomes them? No clue。 It's never explained and the titles are thrown out there as if we're supposed to know what they mean and how they compare to the others。 Other than that, though, I highly recommend the book。 It's a fun and fast read that is sure to leave you craving a second book; and I do hope one comes out soon! 。。。more

The Chrysalises are detailed and the reader is able to fully picture these transforming robots。 As they roam around and battle the Hunduns, you can picture the environment and get the full picture of what the characters are seeing, feeling, and hearing。Zetian is such a strong character。 I loved her journey, her strength, and her determination。 I can’t wait to see how her character continues to develop。 Zetian was not the only good character though。 Li Shimin and Gao Yizhi are amazing as well。 They are willing to stay true to themselves and fight for what they believe is right。 They are great supporters for Zetian, who is a great supporter for them in return。Trying to avoid spoilers, but you can easily find information on this in other reviews and even from a comment from the author, but the romantic relationship in this story is done well and gives representation to YA books。 It’s not just the romantic relationship though。 The characters are diverse, representing multiple facets。Overall, this book is amazing and everyone should read it! 。。。more

Iron Widow is described as Pacific Rim meets The Handmaid’s Tale and that’s the perfect description for this story。 There’s so much that I could talk about with this one, and I’ll start by saying that this story wasn’t crafted without a long list of sensitive topics, of which I’ve included a list at the end of this review。 But this novel from Xiran Jay Zhao pulled me in from the early pages and fully immersed me into the world of Huaxia。In a world where pilots and their concubines control giant Iron Widow is described as Pacific Rim meets The Handmaid’s Tale and that’s the perfect description for this story。 There’s so much that I could talk about with this one, and I’ll start by saying that this story wasn’t crafted without a long list of sensitive topics, of which I’ve included a list at the end of this review。 But this novel from Xiran Jay Zhao pulled me in from the early pages and fully immersed me into the world of Huaxia。In a world where pilots and their concubines control giant transforming robots that battle aliens, we meet teenage Zetian as she offers herself as a concubine-pilot to get revenge for her sister’s death。 What comes next is as much a surprise to her as everyone else, as she’s the one who emerges from the cockpit of the robot, leaving her sister’s killer dead。 After that exciting first stage of the book, it sets up a remarkable story, as Zetian is paired up with one of the strongest pilots in Huaxia, a man who has a dark past of his own。I’m not going into more details than what the blurb explains, but I will say this is a beautiful story of love, acceptance, and fighting against gender roles that are accepted by society。 I loved every second of this book。 The worldbuilding was excellent, and the main three characters were so easy to love and cheer for。 The characters are inspired by historical figures in Chinese history, but those characters are woven into a completely new story in an alternate universe where they’re inspired by history, but not following the same timelines。 It was beautifully done, from beginning to end。I could ramble on for a long time about this book and all the things that the author did that I loved。 I loved the main trio and their relationships with each other。 The layers of those relationships were genuine, honest, and healthy, and it gave me everything I wanted from them。 The dynamic in the main trio is balanced beautifully, and while it doesn’t drive the plot, it’s a subplot that only adds to the story。I can’t wait to see where this series goes in the future。 After reading this ARC, I’ve preordered a physical copy for my library, and I know I’ll be keeping an eye out for future books。Warning: This book discusses some sensitive topics that may be triggering for some readers including murder, violence, torture, physical & mental trauma, anxiety, depression, rape, abuse, and alcohol addiction。Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the digital copy in exchange for an honest review。 All opinions are my own。 。。。more

It definitely has some darker moments, but I was totally here for that。 The pacing was great overall - I was immediately drawn into the story, and it kept my interest the entire time。 The story is set in the future, but it's based on things from Chinese history and culture, including Empress Wu。 I really liked the blend of sci-fi and fantasy elements here。 We have these Chrysalis mechas that are based on Chinese mythological beings。 I thought this was a really clever way to incorporate these details! The mechas are piloted by a boy/girl pair in a sort of yin yang seating situation, and they actually meld with the seats through acupuncture。 We also have these 5 elements of qi that are based on traditional Chinese medicine。 I always love any sort of elemental type magic, so I particularly liked this inclusion and how the dominant aspect of a particular pilot can guide certain properties of the Chrysalis。 Speaking of these mechas, there are some fabulous battles against the Hunduns (aliens)! Of course, all is not well in this world。 Female pilots often die because the male pilots overpower them with mental strain while piloting。 It's also a very patriarchal society, and there are some elements from Chinese history such as women's feet being bound。 The book goes into graphic detail with this which was heartbreaking and horrifying to read about。 The story also examines the use of media in establishing power as well。 I enjoyed this, but I certainly anticipate there being consequences to this in the next book!I really enjoyed all of the characters。 Zetian sets off to avenge her sister and ends up learning more about what's really going on here。 I think this was explored well, and I enjoyed seeing her fight for the truth and fight to get the word out to help female pilots (and women in general)。 She's a very strong character, and I loved seeing her journey。 She obviously doesn't like how society has been structured with female subjugation, but she doesn't always realize that some women don't have the opportunity to take power like she does。 There are some good moments where she realizes that her way isn't the best or the only way to do things and that she may be wrong about things too。 She does sometimes flip flop beliefs quickly based on what people tell her, but this didn't hamper my enjoyment。 It was so empowering to watch her rise up and seize power!I also really loved her bond with Shimin and Yizhi。 It was nice to see a love triangle being set up。。。and then avoided by just having them all get together。 I don't think I've ever seen polyamory in a YA book, so this was a nice change of pace。 Yizhi seems to be very sweet and protective overall。 I love their friendship, and I definitely feel like there's more to him than we know。 Shimin, a death row inmate, was fascinating, and I absolutely want to know more about his backstory。 He's had some awful things happen to him, but I liked seeing him grow even stronger once Zetian and Yizhi enter the picture。 I think they really do make each other better, even if they don't always get along。Clearly, I absolutely loved this book and had such a blast。 I did predict one of the big reveals that happens, but I'm actually very excited that I was right because I want to explore this idea。 I would absolutely recommend this!I received a copy of this for review from the publisher via NetGalley - thank you! I。 Am。 Here。 For。 It!”And then I opened it up and read Xiran Jay Zhao’s author’s notes at the beginning of my ARC edition and my eyes widened in surprise at the actual premise of this wild, raw, untamed beast of a book… because I realized what this book actually is wasn’t something that could be tidied up and slotted neatly into a bookseller’s constricting summary box: it’s Pacifi I was so excited when I read the premise for this book。 I thought to myself, “Pacific Rim meets The Handmaid’s Tale? I。 Am。 Here。 For。 It!”And then I opened it up and read Xiran Jay Zhao’s author’s notes at the beginning of my ARC edition and my eyes widened in surprise at the actual premise of this wild, raw, untamed beast of a book… because I realized what this book actually is wasn’t something that could be tidied up and slotted neatly into a bookseller’s constricting summary box: it’s Pacific Rim meets The Handmaid’s Tale meets Chinese gongdou dramas meets the real-life Empress Regnant Wu (the only legitimate female sovereign China ever had) reimagined as a teenage peasant-girl (with a thirst for revenge) turned into a mecha-pilot who seethes at the patriarchy and the way in which women are automatically slotted into place from birth and never given any other options in life and decides NOPE。 Throw that all into a bottle, shake it up, open it, and what you get is the best sci-fi book I think I’ve ever read。 The best book shock I’ve ever had。 The most blood lust I’ve ever tasted。 The best war cry I’ve ever heard。 The best blood bath I’ve ever read。 The biggest rallying call I’ve ever seen。 The sweetest apathy that made me come apart at the seams。 The most vengeful hatred I’ve witnessed sharpened to a razor’s edge。 I couldn’t stop reading。 I ate through my dinner。 I noted passage after passage until I was so swept away by it all I started forgetting to take notes because I was sunk too deep into this futuristic, otherworldly China where one teenage girl who has nothing to lose herself but cares fiercely and violently about so many other things, one man who loves her and is open-minded and educated enough to know that the status quo is wrong and is willing to stand beside her no matter what, and another man who never stood a chance in the world they were born in but is sick of the system。 Their culture, their whole world, is built on teams of two。 But, between these three people who all can see outside this paradigm, they all acknowledge and accept this world and its conventions are not who they are and it is not meant for them。 They were not meant to be slotted into tidy little boxes, just like this book was not meant to be summarized into a limited character count。 This book is distributed in part by Penguin Teen, but I’m telling you: if you think this is just some YA sci-fi book, you’re abso-friggin-lutely wrong。 This book is one of those books you NEED to read。 It’s an IMPORTANT book。 I won’t lie: It’s target audience is very obviously women in their teens and twenties, but I highly encourage women of all ages and ESPECIALLY men to read this book。 Listen to the testimony of this book。 Listen to its voice。 Its pain。 Its drive。 Its passion。 Its motivation。 Its anger。 Its thirst。 Really listen to it and maybe you’ll learn some things about women you never understood before; because, believe me, I felt completely in sync with Wu Zetian every step of the way through this book。 The action scenes in this book are written beautifully and brutally at the same time。 The plot is gracefully and carefully mapped out。 The science is explained and makes sense when mixed in with the traditional Chinese beliefs regarding qi。 The writing is impassioned, driven, and as impactful as the message of the book。 Wu Zetian’s voice, as a character, is probably the best I’ve read in years。 She rings clear as a bell and as blunt as a sledgehammer, which is something so refreshing I wanted to jump in the book and volunteer to be her PA because I appreciate people who tell it like it is (and if you don’t like it too bad)。 Yizhi is a well-educated, strategic, well-connected, rich, sweet, badass cinnamon roll… and his love and dedication for Wu Zetian really threads through this whole book and helps quilt it together。 Li Shimin is… a beautiful tragedy。 Born into a world that he never stood a chance in and slotted into a system that was always going to work against him, his story is heartbreaking, but the way in which Wu Zetian and he grow to care for one another and take a stand together is glorious。 And their partnership with Yizhi shows that a triangle is definitely the stronger shape。 This book does end on a cliffhanger, being as it is the first in a series, but it’s not a cliffhanger without a purpose。 That’s all I can say。 In the end, what I will say is this: When I finished this book, it was midnight here in California。 All over America, women are fighting for their reproductive rights because men still think they have a say in what we do with our bodies。 In Afghanistan, females are back to being banned from receiving an education once more because men say so。 In some parts of the world, girls too young to read this book (and some that would never be allowed to anyway) are being slotted into the places they’ll be expected to stay in for the rest of their lives because men say so。 When I finished this book, somewhere in the world there was likely another child bride being taken because men say so。 And I was FURIOUS。 This book made me want to go out and smash the patriarchy, because Wu Zetian is right: no more。 。。。more

I took a break from school work to start this and that break never ended。 By a quarter of the way in, I knew this book was going to be 5 stars。 I was absolutely hooked by the characters, the plot, and the writing。 Wu Zetian is our badass, morally gray bisexual protagonist trying to take down the patriarchy。 She lives in a world where your life force, your qi, allows you to power giant mechas in battle against the alien Hunduns。 I absolutely loved the incorporation of traditional Chinese medicine with the fantastical use of acupuncture to harness one’s qi in a manner particular to your dominant elemental constitution。 However, powering the Chrysalis mechas requires a man and a woman, a balance of yin and yang, that typically drains the women of their life force。 Only a select few women with especially strong spirits have survived their male counterparts。 Zetian discovers she is one such woman, her spirit strength and pure mental willpower propelling her to the very top of the pilot rankings where she seeks to uncover the truth behind the sexist pilot system in a world dripping with misogyny。 She does so alongside her 2 bisexual love interests。 And no, there is no love triangle here。 They all fall for each other, ending up in a polyamorous relationship where all of their strengths shine through。 The 3 main characters are all RUTHLESS in their own way and you can’t help but root for them。 The development of their relationship dynamic also brought out some great conversation points about love amidst all the darker elements in the story。 However, the focus really is on the systemic injustice in their world。 Many of the connections to real-life issues were so poignant and Zetian lets you live out your god-complex villain arc to right these injustices。 This really is the kind of book that makes you go feral, rooting for Zetian in all her anti-hero glory。 I will say, this book should probably be marketed as adult, not YA。 All the characters are 18+, it contains some more mature, heavy content, and it just has the feel of adult sci-fi/fantasy。 。。。more

ARC received from the publisher in exchange for an honest review。I haven't had a book grip me like this in a very long time。 IRON WIDOW is a fiery debut that doesn't shy away from any of its inspirations— with a delightfully over-the-top, power-hungry anti-hero for a main character doing anything and everything to dismantle a rotten misogynist power system with nothing sugarcoated or shied away from, this book was a delight from start to finish。Set in a futuristic sci-fi world where the last dre ARC received from the publisher in exchange for an honest review。I haven't had a book grip me like this in a very long time。 IRON WIDOW is a fiery debut that doesn't shy away from any of its inspirations— with a delightfully over-the-top, power-hungry anti-hero for a main character doing anything and everything to dismantle a rotten misogynist power system with nothing sugarcoated or shied away from, this book was a delight from start to finish。Set in a futuristic sci-fi world where the last dregs of humanity face a constant onslaught from giant creatures called Hunduns, the people's last hope to fend them off is celebrity pilots; recruited based on their spirit pressure to pilot husks of the Hunduns called Chysalises。 The stars are the men who pilot them, and more often than not their female concubine pilots die from the strain。 Wu Zetian, whose sister fell victim to one such pilot, has had enough of this system and pulls up to exact her revenge— except she finds it in a very unexpected way。Xiran Jay Zhao has crafted a rich, brutal world, and I loved every fast-paced second of this novel。 Was it a little ridiculous in places? Sure, but in the exact same way Pacific Rim was, which is a movie I adore。 I felt a full range of emotions both during and after reading, and while I want to stay away from gushing about the love interests since I don't want them to overshadow the amazing world, plot, and characters, it's impossible to say anything about Iron Widow without getting into Shimin and Yizhi。 Softest of villains, most vicious of poets, the love triangle that turns into a poly triangle (!!!!) was EVERYTHING to me。 I loved all three of them so much, I can't even put it into proper words。In conclusion: I needed the sequel yesterday and I will not shut up until it's here。 This is one of the debuts you definitely don't want to miss this year。 If you want an unrelenting power-hungry heroine, a vicious story that doesn't stop digging and asking questions, and fun mecha battles, you are sure to adore IRON WIDOW as much as I did。 ❧ 4。5 ★ 。。。more

I think the story turned out bigger than what the author intended it to be。 。。。more

It’s such a fresh take on the typical YA romance。Shimin was a decently developed character, with a complex past and motivation。The ending recaptured my interest with its fast pace。The Cons: What I Didn’t LikeThe major problem in this novel is the lack of thought behind motivations。 Everything is grossly simplified and readers are just told to accept it blindly。 I wanted more depth from the story and from all of the characters。Zetian annoyed me because she was so one-dimensional, and yet, we were supposed to root for her。 She had a prickly personality and almost no redeeming qualities。The worldbuilding was almost non-existent。 We never find out why things are the way they are, or how things even work。 If you are familiar with Pacific Rim, then you will see many commonalities but again, there is no real structure to this world。The romance was a let-down because it was very insta-love; the MC goes from hate to love very quickly and I never found the attraction between any of the characters believable。The writing style was extremely juvenile and really needed some editing。Clearly, this novel had some issues。 Honestly, I think it needs more editing and more development on all levels。 It has the potential to be amazing, and the ending has me really excited for the sequel。 But for now, I have to give this 2/5 stars。 。。。more

No。 This just felt too forced。 It wasn't also explored more, so it really didn't seem convincing。I liked the concept of the "qi" and the "elemental types" but it didn't feel well-explained either。 The book kept going forward and explaining along the way facts about it。 This could have been accomplished towards the first part of the book, so that the readers had a solid foundation before the story moved forward。 Neither could I properly grasp the idea of the mental link in operating the giant mecha robots。 Despite all that, I did enjoy the themes it discussed, and also the family conflicts, the idea of shame and dignity, and the role of media in this futuristic world。 The writing itself was also pretty good。 A lot of lines and passages in the book caught me off guard with how well-written it was。Overall, I would say I enjoyed bits and pieces of this book。 And while I loved the concept and premise behind it, it could've been better if each aspect mentioned above was given more thought and expounded more in the book。 。。。more

I have stuff I could be picky about, like the fact that some stuff feels like it didn't get the proper foreshadowing it deserved or that transitions could have used more work, this was truly a refreshing book to read in the sci-fi genre。 It's a wonderful honor to both the mecha subgenre and the Empress Wu the main character is based on。Very excited for the sequel。 I have stuff I could be picky about, like the fact that some stuff feels like it didn't get the proper foreshadowing it deserved or that transitions could have used more work, this was truly a refreshing book to read in the sci-fi genre。 It's a wonderful honor to both the mecha subgenre and the Empress Wu the main character is based on。Very excited for the sequel。 。。。more

Highly recommended) with how the alien robots are piloted by humans who control the robots with their minds。 Zetian, our main character, was really viscous and I actually liked that about her, she didn't take any shit from anyone。 Shimin was such a sweet cinnamon roll of a man, I really just wanted to hug him and never let go。 Yizhi was sweet as well but I have a tendency to favor the underdog, the traumatized, the ones with dark pasts。 but boy what a surprise those three pulled on me。 I did not read any blurbs before cracking this book and when I couldn't tell who Zetian was going to end up with I feared we'd be stuck in a love triangle and I really don't care for those。 But SURPRISE! Polyamorous relationship activated! You never see that in YA so I was really surprised and really applaud Zhao for taking that risk。 Although I loved this book I want to be realistic about a few things。 This is a debut novel and it kind of reads of as one。 The writing is a bit juvenile, there are several times where words like "duh" are used in dialogue which always made me pause involuntarily。 While the whole premise of the story is amazing the actual reasons why things are happening or why things (political system, alien controversy, etc。) are the way they are isn't really explained。 But the story is so entertaining that you don't really realize any of these things at first。Overall though the world Zhao built was amazing, I'm really looking forward to the sequel of Iron Widow because this first one ended on a cliffhanger and I was so devastated by what happened。 Thank you so much to Penguin Random House Canada and Penguin Teen for providing me with an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I was really excited to read this book since I adore the author’s video essays。 However, I have mixed feelings now that I’ve finished the book itself。 Let’s start with what I loved。 First off, I thought it was really interesting that the magic system is based off of Chinese mythology and medicine。 For instance, characters have abilities depending on which of the five elements of qigong—wood, fire, earth, metal or water—that they have the strongest affinity toward。 Also, Chrysalises operate based on the idea of yin and yang and the legend of jian—the one-eyed, one-winged bird that must find a mate in order to fly。 (Yes, in case you’re wondering, this is the same bird also referenced in Darling in the Franxx。)There are really cool core concepts in this book。 However, I feel that the story unfortunately gets dragged down by shoddy writing。 For instance, both the dialogue and Zeitan’s internal dialogue feels extremely juvenile and out of place at times。Also, I want to point out that this is an extremely faced-paced book, and this comes as a bit of a double-edged sword。 On one hand, it’s jampacked with alien stomping and punching and characters shooting energy lasers from their eyes。 However, as entertaining as this is, I feel like that nearly non-stop action comes at the cost of characters’ relationship development。 This is especially true for the polyamorous love triangle in the book。 While Shimin and Zeitan have plenty of quality time together and their relationship progressed naturally, I feel like Yizhi presents the weakest side of the triangle。 His connection with Shimin felt incredibly rushed and, moving forward, I do wish we get more flashbacks between Zeitan and Yizhi in order to make their undying love more convincing。 Overall, Iron Widow is a fun but flawed mecha romp。Thank you, NetGalley and Penguin Teen, for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more
